Daily/Weekly Routine

Free ranging by bigdog on sxc.hu

I top up the feed (if you leave feed out all the time, you may get rats!), replenish the water. When there is 14 hours of daylight, hybrid layers will lay an egg every 25hours. Make sure you check every day, or you run the risk of hens going broody and sitting on the eggs

During the day

The hens will roam around, eating your grass, digging for worms, having dustbaths and generally having fun! They may lie outside with wing outstretched on hot days. I’ll often check the coop, scooping up droppings and chucking them on the compost heap.

Check the hens regularly – look under feathers for red mite or lice and check their legs for scaly leg mite (puffy/raised scales) – the health page gives details on treatment and prevention.

As it gets dark

Make sure they have all roosted and close up the coop to protect them from foxes.

Weekly

Every week give the coop a good clean out (I use a scraper, brush and a good spray of 10% Poultry Shield) , replacing the bedding and podwering with Diatom for preventing of red mite. Is use rapecore/hempcore as bedding or straw.
