What is grit?
What is grit? It is small stones that chickens store in their gizzard. In there it acts like teeth to grind up food. For chicks, grit is only necessary if the chicks have access to grain or other foodstuffs. Chicks on mash or crumbles don’t need it. Warning: Do NOT give chicks oystershell. It is not grit, it is used to give laying hens extra calcium for egg shell production. This extra calcium will cause bone development problems in young birds.
How do you get the hens in the coop at night?
For the first few nights after getting them, pop through the pop hole yourself. My first 3 got the hang of it after 3 days! You can also try putting alight in the house to encourage them in.
What do I do if my chooks wont roost at night?
Don’t panic!
They will when they have got the hang of it all!
What is Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) for?
ACV is one of those cure-alls! It is meant to lessen stress, help with digestion and give more tender meat. Most folks give it at 2% (20ml to every litre) in the water for one week every month.Chickens drink roughly 125ml a day, double in hot weatherHow do you tell the sex of a young bird?
Not by old wives tales!
Professionals use vent sexing – they look at the vent in a chick for a rudimentary male organ.
In hybrids – the crossing can be done to produce different coloured chicks for males to females.
