Rats

Unfortunately when it comes to keep chickens, you will end up with rats too at some stage.
To help prevent getting rats – which are a real health hazard to you and the chooks, take these steps

  • Put food away in a galvanised steel bin every night
  • Remove water overnight
  • Rats go along rat runs – so block their paths

I’ve tried various ways of getting rid of rats..
Rat traps – are a giant sized mouse trap , but a shotgun solution. I laid three and caught a hedgehog and a blackbird, which was awful.

Humane rat trap – all well and good, but what do you do with a snarling caged rat? I had one and it caught nothing and the bait disappeared. We had clever rats

DIY Shed rat pellets – also did nothing because they aren’t allowed to sell the strong stuff that works! www.ratbait.co.uk do sell effective rat poisons.

Council pest control - came next day, laid some blue pellets in trays under the shed and compost heap. Job done! Highly recommended if not your council hasn’t cut that service.
