History

They were first imported from the US in 1852. Their original name was Shanghai. They are thought to have originated from Brahmaputra in India and then came to the UK via the US.

Characteristics

Brahmas are popular because they are placid, trusting and tolerant of other chickens. They take a long time tomature - hens may not lay until 6 or 7 months old.
Because they are so large they do not fly, so you will not need to roof in the run! They also take up a lot of space!
