History

The Rhode Island Red was developed in Massachusets and Rhode Island between 1880 and 1899. It's ancestors include Malay, Shanghai, Java and the Brown Leghorn. It was introduced to the UK in 1903. Since the 1940's they have been selectively breed for egg production. In 1954 The Rhode Island Red became the official bird of Rhode Island State in the USA.

Characteristics

The most successful dual purpose bird of all time. It can handle marginal diet and poor handling and will still produce. (Although that is not recommended!).
